I model how freshwater from the Bonnet Carré Spillway reshapes salinity, circulation and oyster habitat in the Mississippi Sound, then train explainable AI surrogates that answer in seconds what a supercomputer takes days to simulate.

Four questions
about moving water

The work connects river operations to coastal ecosystems: what a freshwater diversion does to the estuary, how quickly we can predict it, how the climate around it is shifting, and what it means for oysters.

01 · Hydrodynamics

Bonnet Carré Spillway & the Mississippi Sound

I build and run the msbCOAWST modeling framework (COAWST/ROMS) to evaluate how freshwater diversions from the Mississippi River alter salinity, circulation and recovery time across the Mississippi Sound and Bight. Scenario experiments replay the 2018–2020 openings and test hypothetical operations: changed timing, modified discharge thresholds, and removing or shortening the record 2019 double opening.

Funded through USCRP, USACE ERDC and GOMESA. I prepared the physical modeling contribution to the completed USCRP project final report with Dr. Mustafa Kemal Cambazoglu.

Surrogates that think in seconds

With Tulane University (Dr. Omer Mermer, Prof. Ibrahim Demir), I train XGBoost, Gradient Boosting and Random Forest surrogates on eight msbCOAWST simulations to predict salinity in the Western Mississippi Sound. On unseen scenarios they track the ocean model at r = 0.97–0.99.

SHAP explanations show what drives the response: chiefly spillway discharge over the preceding 30–60 days and time since the last opening. The next step turns this into near-real-time mitigation planning and an early-warning framework for freshwater-diversion decisions.

Reading change in waves, wind & rivers

Multi-scale trend analysis of wind-wave climatology across 24 Gulf of Mexico stations from WAVEWATCH III output, published in Ocean Engineering (2026). Parallel work tracks seasonal to decadal discharge trends in the Mississippi and Pearl Rivers using Mann–Kendall and Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA).

This line began in Türkiye with precipitation trends in the northwest (Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, 2023) and Susurluk Basin flows, and was sharpened by advanced time-series training in spectral, wavelet and multitaper methods.

Oyster habitat under shifting salinity

Hydrodynamic outputs feed a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) to show how spillway operations and riverine inflow change where oysters can thrive in the Mississippi Sound. Presented at GulfCon26, and grounded by summer 2026 fieldwork on the USM-ERDC Oyster Lease Project.

Co-authored work with fisheries ecologists extends the model outputs to species distribution shifts (MaxEnt) for fish and shellfish under alternative operations.
